What makes a great interiors store?

May 15, 2018

Wow, what a few weeks!

We've been quiet recently, beavering away on new projects and commission pieces. That is until we received a pretty exciting email from Joanna of Muddy Stiletto's - Wiltshire, letting us know Snug had been nominated for Best Interiors Store in their annual awards!

This was a huge shock and we're SUPER excited. Especially as we have now made it through as FINALISTS. We've got a badge to prove it and everything.

Now, we're up against some stiff competition - and as such, I have no grandiose expectations of winning, but we're hugely proud to be recognised amongst some super talented people from across the Muddy Stilettos community.

So that got me thinking - what makes a great interiors store? Well here's my perspective:

 1) Inspiration - rooms that need redecoration or a freshen up can often leave you confused, at a point of conflict between you and your partners taste / ideas / expectations of the room (surprisingly common!) or struggling to get the 'look' you want from your budget. So a good interiors store should paint the picture for you, advise on colour and texture combinations and also guide you into thinking about the longevity of the room - whether this is through the person behind the till, or the voice behind the online store or through the variety of products on offer - the store should make you think, but more importantly, excite you into decision making.

2) Guidance - be that one on one from a visit to your local bricks and mortar store, or by a lengthy email discussion, to get your bespoke commission just right; whomever is the person behind the interior 'store' should be able to guide you in making your purchase.

This may be based on how the fabrics will suit your lifestyle, the colour combinations that will balance with your paint and flooring choice and blend your vision with their expertise, so your finished room makes you smile every time you walk in.

3) Trust - ideally you want to buy from this store more than once. Trust goes a long way to encourage this, especially if you have a penchant for buying local and supporting independent businesses. You want to know what you're buying is of quality,

will have a long life span and can be maintained with minimum 'effort.'

Generally, handmade goods hold a slightly more premium price tag than their mass produced, chain store counterparts - and this admittedly, is not justifiable to everyone. However, knowing top quality materials have been used, the item your buying has been handmade with the skill and expertise of someone who has taken the time to hone their craft and can personally advise on the best way to maintain it AND that offers you a unique piece that no-one else will have, well I think this packs a punch over price!

4) Style - this is a given. A great interior store should be aspirational and exciting. It should also make it easy for you to select just a few items that will make a big difference to your room. Snug is all about cosy style - balancing that joyous comfort that makes you feel 'at home' with a sense of style - unique pieces that stand out, made with high quality materials that add texture and depth to a room.

Home is a retreat, an escape, a place to hibernate and to blossom. Ultimately, it should make you feel good. And a great interiors store should help you to achieve that.

(If Snug makes you feel that way, the we'd love to have your vote in the Muddy Stilettos - Wilts awards! Click here to make yours.)
